about
Kevin had been listening to some First Nation music, and, inspired by this, he got behind his drumkit. He put his percussive skills to excellent use and sent the resultant recordings to Diane, so that she could start stitching stuff together to form the basis of the emerging track. He also sent over a blistering, crackling, shimmery bass riff, which she transposed to support a melody, as yet unwritten, and then she started to add samples of bassoon, flute and augmented Cretan lyra.
Imagine our surprise when, out of this heady brew, something emerged that was part goth, part almost-hip-hop!
Meanwhile, the sorry state of the world formed the basis of our late night chats on Messenger, along with some long awaited signs of resistance from the downtrodden masses suggesting that the tide may be about to turn. These conversations led to the development of the lyrics, and out of this grew the melody. The result, this eclectic, intercultural blend, is a companion piece to our previous single, Rise.
lyrics
Shine:
This ship of fools is going down.
A billion stars are rising in the sky.
The darker the night, the brighter we will shine.
Rip it up, rip it up, let’s start again.
Write a hope for tomorrow.
Light it up, light it up, good citizen.
See who they’re working for.
What’s going to be your final straw?
It’s obvious now…
The ninety-nine are under attack;
The one destroy our lives.
The killers never had your back,
Except to stick their knives in.
Rip it up, rip it up, begin again.
Can you feel it changing?
Enough is enough, good citizen.
‘Too far’ was miles ago.
Please say it’s obvious now…
